How do You Lead a Brumby Across an Australian Cattleguard?

Long Rider Gin Szgola leading black horse loaded with gear across cattle guard using plywood boards in Australian outback

Long Rider Gin Szagola, who is currently traveling the entire length of Australia with her brumby Fable (December 2025), shares how she recently crossed a cattle guard. (Gin Szagola photo / Yalata, South Australia)

She writes:

There is a local village named Yalata near the cattle guards and I was tipped off that I should call the local ranger there in advance to see if he would assist. He dropped the plywood off. Only it wasn’t long enough, so luckily I had phone service upon arrival to call him again. That’s how I got photos of our crossing, as he drove out again.

Listen to Gin describe how she and Fable found hay and water and her encounters with kangaroos, camels and emus as they crossed the Nullarbor Desert. They are the first recorded horse and rider to have crossed the Nullarbor in modern times without relying on a chase vehicle.
