Congratulations to Gin Szagola and her Snowy Mountain Brumby, Fable, for having just completed what no other rider has ever done.

They have crossed southern Australia from east to west coast with a single horse and no chase vehicle or mobile support team.

The 4,400 kilometer (2,700 mile) journey took eight months, with Fable carrying Gin bitless and barefoot (with Renegade hoof boots) across some of the most unforgiving terrain on Earth including the almost waterless Nullarbor Plain. Volunteers organized by Gin on the fly set up feed and water along the desert route so they could cross this 800-mile wide desert expanse.

Watch this video where Gin describes to Travel Grit how she crossed the Nullarbor desert.

The route to Ravensthorpe, where we caught up with Gin and Fable. That’s over 2000 miles from where they started. Gin has since completed her voyage to the Indian Ocean.

Fable was the first horse Gin ever trained herself. What makes this even more extraordinary is that he started off as a wild brumby, who, over the course of three months, learned to trust Gin enough to start this epic journey.

This is adventure travel stripped to its essence—a woman, and a brumby traveling across Australia in a way that’s never been done before.

Congratulations, Gin and Fable!
